Toilet Installation Cost Calculator
Toilet installation cost is about $580 for a straight swap, of which only $110 to $250 is the plumber. Almost every question asked about this job is really the same question: is the fitting fee fair? So this page separates the fixture from the labour and prices the labour at your local wage. The one thing that legitimately doubles it is the flange under the old toilet.

What you are paying for
- The toilet itself
- about $335
- Plumber’s labour alone
- $119 to $128
The labour figure is the local wage for a plumber, loaded with employer costs and a contractor’s markup. It is the number to hold a quote against: a straight swap is about two hours of work, not a day.

- How much water a toilet is allowed to use
- The federal maximum is 1.6 gallons per flush, and the voluntary WaterSense level is 1.28 — twenty percent below it. The EPA also notes that older toilets still in service use as much as 6 gallons a flush, which is the real argument for replacing one that still works. From EPA WaterSense, Residential Toilets. - Why that matters more than it sounds
- Flushing the toilet is the single largest use of water inside a house, ahead of showers and baths, according to USGS Water Science School, How much water do I use at home each day?. The same page notes that some water agencies offer rebates for installing an efficient toilet, which is worth checking with your own utility before you buy, because it can be a meaningful fraction of the fixture price. - What we deliberately do not publish
- Three of the four questions people ask about this job name a specific retailer. We do not publish those prices, because they are set by local subcontractors, change without notice, and we have no source we could stand behind. The labour figure above is offered instead: it is built from published federal wage data for your area, and it is what any quote should be measured against.
- Material prices
- Modelled estimates, not sourced prices. No public, machine-readable source of US residential material prices exists, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Each line carries its own uncertainty band. How we estimate them.

What this figure does not include
- Permit fees
- A like-for-like replacement rarely needs one; moving the drain does. Fees vary by city with no national source and are excluded rather than averaged.
- Moving the toilet to a different position
- Relocating means opening the floor and re-routing the drain with the right fall. That is a different job, several times this size, and often structural.
- Finished flooring around the toilet
- If the floor is being replaced too, the toilet comes off for that work anyway and the sequence changes. This models replacing the fixture on an existing floor.
- Wall finishing on a wall-hung installation
- The carrier frame price includes the frame, not closing up, tiling or making good the wall it went into.
- Fixing a blocked drain
- A toilet that backs up is usually a drain problem rather than a fixture problem, and replacing the fixture will not fix it.
Questions people actually ask
What do plumbers usually charge to install a toilet?
A straight swap is about two hours of work. Priced at the plumber wage published for your area, loaded with employer costs and a contractor markup, that comes to roughly $110 to $250 in labour across most of the country before the toilet itself. Many plumbers quote a flat fee rather than hours, which is reasonable, but it should be in that neighbourhood. What legitimately turns two hours into four is the flange under the old toilet, and that is usually discovered rather than quoted.
How much does Home Depot charge to install a toilet?
Big-box installation is arranged through local subcontractors, so the price is set regionally and changes without notice — we do not publish a figure we cannot source. What this calculator gives you instead is the underlying labour at your local wage, which is the number to compare any quote against, theirs included. Two things are worth asking whoever quotes: whether haul-away of the old toilet is included, and what happens to the price if the flange turns out to need work.
How much does Lowes charge to install a toilet?
The same applies: retail installation is delivered by independent contractors under a national programme, and the quoted price varies by market. Rather than repeat a number, the useful comparison is the labour figure above at your own metro wage. Retail installation often prices the fitting attractively and makes its margin on the fixture, so it is worth pricing the toilet separately before deciding whether the bundle is actually cheaper.
Can a handyman replace a toilet?
In most states, yes. Replacing a fixture on existing supply and waste connections is generally maintenance rather than plumbing work requiring a licence, though a few jurisdictions are stricter and it is worth a call to the local building department. The judgement call is the flange: repairing or raising it means working on the drain itself, which is where the line into licensed plumbing is usually drawn. A handyman who finds a broken flange should be telling you that, not improvising with an extender ring.
