Water Softener Installation Cost Calculator

Water softener installation cost runs about $1,400 to $2,100 installed for a typical household. The figure moves on two things almost nobody asks about: how hard your water actually is, which sets the size of the unit, and whether your house was plumbed with a softener loop. A house without one needs the main line cut into, and that doubles the plumbing labour.

The one input that changes the answer for you.

Your water utility publishes this every year. On a well, you need a test.

The level at which most households notice scale and film.

Water use drives how often the unit has to regenerate.

At 8.8 grains per gallon (about 150 mg/L), a household of 4 removes about 2,640 grains a day. Sized for weekly regeneration with salt-efficient dosing, that needs a 32,000 grain unit.
What your house already has

Whether the plumbing was built ready for a softener is the single biggest swing in this job.

Where these numbers come from

Water hardness classification
Bands and thresholds from the USGS Water Science School, Hardness of Water: soft below 60 mg/L, moderately hard to 120, hard to 180, very hard above that. Converted to grains per gallon at 17.1 mg/L per grain. Retrieved 2026-08-22.
Where to find your own hardness
If you are on a public supply, your utility already publishes it. The Safe Drinking Water Act requires an annual Consumer Confidence Report from every community water system, and hardness is normally in it. On a private well you need a test. Retrieved 2026-08-22.

Material prices
Modelled estimates, not sourced prices. No public, machine-readable source of US residential material prices exists, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Each line carries its own uncertainty band. How we estimate them.

What this figure does not include

Permit fees
Some jurisdictions require a plumbing permit for the tie-in and some do not. Fees vary by city with no national source, so they are excluded and stated rather than averaged.
A water test
Sizing depends on your actual hardness. If you are on a public supply your utility already publishes it in its annual quality report; on a well, you need a test. Either way it is a separate and small cost, and doing it first is what stops you buying the wrong size.
Treating anything other than hardness
Iron, manganese, sulphur, nitrates and taste problems need different equipment. A softener removes calcium and magnesium and is not a general water treatment system.
Running salt costs
This is an installation figure. A softener consumes salt and water for as long as it runs, and a metered unit uses considerably less of both than a timer unit.
Septic system implications
Brine discharge to a septic system is restricted or regulated in some jurisdictions. If you are on septic, ask before you buy.

Questions people actually ask

How much is a water softener for a 2000 sq ft house?

Floor area is the wrong input, which is why answers built on it are so inconsistent. What sizes a softener is how much hardness it has to remove per day, and that comes from two things: how many people live there and how hard the water is. Four people on hard water need roughly a 32,000 grain unit; the same four on very hard water need about double that. A 2,000 square foot house with two occupants and soft water might need no softener at all. Put your household size and hardness in above and the unit sizes itself.

How much is labour to install a water softener?

Three hours of plumber time where the house already has a softener loop — a pair of stubbed pipes waiting for the unit — and around six where the pipework has to be cut into the main line. That difference is the single biggest swing in the job, and it is decided by whether your house was built in a hard-water region where builders plumb for it as standard. The calculator above prices those hours using the Bureau of Labor Statistics wage survey for your own metropolitan area.

What is the typical lifespan of a water softener?

Ten to fifteen years is the usual range for the resin bed and control valve, and harder water shortens it because the unit regenerates more often. A metered unit that regenerates on actual use rather than on a timer lasts longer and uses considerably less salt, which is most of why it costs more to buy. A sediment pre-filter also extends resin life, particularly on well water, and costs a fraction of the resin it protects.

How much does Home Depot charge to install a water softener?

Big-box installed pricing is normally a managed subcontract: the retailer sells the package and a local plumber does the work, with the retailer taking a margin for handling the sale and the warranty. That usually produces a higher headline figure than the same plumber quoted directly, in exchange for one point of accountability. It also tends to come with a fixed unit size rather than one sized to your water, which matters more here than in most jobs. The figures above are built from what the work costs, so you can see what the packaging is worth to you.
