Stucco Repair Cost Calculator

Patching 40 square feet of traditional stucco at ground level runs about $1,310 in Atlanta — $957 to $1,664, or $32.76 a square foot. On a synthetic EIFS wall the same damage is $1,557, and the repair is the smaller question: that system does not breathe, so what matters is whether the sheathing behind it is wet. Finding out adds $860.

The wall

The elevation figure is only used when the whole face is re-coated or repainted, and it is worth having: it is the number that turns “the patch will show” into a decision. ⚠️ Height matters more here than on most jobs because three coats means coming back on separate days — each has to cure before the next — so the access has to stay up in between. That is why a small repair high on a wall costs what it does.

Cement render over metal lath over building paper: heavy, hard, and vapour-permeable, so water that gets in can get out again. Tap it and it sounds solid. This is the forgiving case — a patch is a patch, and the wall behind it is very unlikely to be the problem.

Cutting back to sound material, checking the lath and paper behind, and rebuilding in coats with drying time between them. The commonest real repair, and the one where the honest conversation about colour matching happens.

The even, slightly gritty texture on most American stucco. The most forgiving to match because the pattern is fine and regular.

What the texture is worth

Cost by finish texture
Sand or float finish$1,374
Dash or rough cast$1,434
Smooth troweled$1,675
Lace or knockdown$1,524

⚠️ Smooth troweled is the hardest to repair invisibly and the reason is simple: there is no texture to hide behind. On a smooth wall, re-coating the elevation is often the only result worth paying for.

The figure above is already calculated. Each step just makes it more yours, and you can stop at any of them.

Two completely different walls are both called stucco

From the pavement they are indistinguishable. Knock on yours: solid and cold is traditional, hollow with a little give under a fingernail is synthetic.

The same damage in each stucco system
The wallHoursThe repairChecking behind it
Traditional three-coat, over metal lath12$1,374$2,234
EIFS or synthetic, over foam board16.5$1,645$2,505

The repair itself differs by $271, and that is the small half of the story. Traditional stucco is cement over metal lath over building paper: heavy, hard, and it breathes, so water that gets in gets out again. A synthetic wall is a thin acrylic coat over foam board glued to the sheathing, and it does not breathe — water that got past a failed sealant joint years ago is still in there, against the framing. ⚠️ So on a synthetic wall the visible crack is rarely the job. The question is what the water has been doing behind it, and the only way to answer that is to take meter readings and open a small area. That is the last column, and it is the item worth insisting on rather than the one to cut.

The patch is going to show

What you doExtra over a patchCost
Patch it and stop—$1,374
Patch, then repaint the elevation+$368$1,741
Re-coat the whole elevation+$2,041$3,414

Nobody can match a patch into a thirty-year-old wall, and a quote that promises to should be read carefully. The colour of traditional stucco is in the mix rather than on top, the texture is applied by hand, and the wall around it has three decades of sun on it. ⚠️ So the real choice is between living with a visible repair and paying $368 to paint the elevation or $2,041 to re-coat it. Painting is cheaper now and commits you to painting again for the rest of the wall’s life; an unpainted traditional wall never needed it. Re-coating keeps that property and costs more today. What almost nobody is offered is either option — which is why the patch gets done and the disappointment arrives a week later.

Where these numbers come from

Two different walls are both called stucco, and it is the whole question
Traditional three-coat, over metal lath is cement render over metal lath over building paper: heavy, hard, and vapour-permeable, so water that gets in can get out again. EIFS or synthetic, over foam board is a thin acrylic coat over polystyrene board glued to the sheathing: insulating, light, and it does not breathe. From the pavement they are indistinguishable, and no other calculator asks which you have. The repair itself differs by only $247 — $1,310 against $1,557 — and that is the small half. On a synthetic wall the visible crack is rarely the job: water that got past a failed sealant joint years ago is still in there, against the framing, and what it has done is invisible from outside. ⚠️ The check costs nothing and takes ten seconds: knock on the wall with a knuckle. Solid and cold is traditional. Hollow, with a slight give under a fingernail, is synthetic — and then the line that matters is the investigation, $2,417 all in on this wall rather than $1,557. Opening a section of a wet synthetic wall is also how the question on our mold remediation cost calculator gets asked, at $2,099 for the render side of it.
The patch is going to show, and that is worth deciding in advance
Nobody can match a patch into a thirty-year-old wall, and a quote that promises to should be read carefully: the colour of traditional stucco is in the mix rather than on top, the texture is applied by hand, and the wall around it has three decades of sun on it. So the real choice is between living with a visible repair and paying to make the whole face uniform — $368 more to repaint the elevation or $1,901 more to re-coat it, against $1,310 for the patch alone. ⚠️ Painting is cheaper now and commits you to painting again for the rest of the wall’s life; an unpainted traditional wall never needed it, and our exterior painting cost calculator prices that recurrence. Re-coating keeps the property and costs more today. What almost nobody is offered is either option, which is why the patch gets done and the disappointment arrives a week later. The finish decides how bad it looks: $1,310 on a sand or float finish against $1,584 on smooth troweled, and on a smooth wall re-coating is often the only result worth paying for, because there is no texture to hide behind.
Why a small repair costs so much per square foot
Fill hairline cracks is $694 and re-coat a whole elevation is $3,212, which is a factor of 4.6 — but per square foot the order reverses: $32.76 for the patch against $6.42 for the whole face. Traditional stucco is applied in three coats and each has to cure before the next, so a repair of any size is several visits to the same wall, and the call-out, the mixing and the setting up are paid every time. Height compounds it, because the access has to stay up between visits: $1,310 at ground level, $2,329 on a second storey and $3,692 on a third, for exactly the same 40 square feet. ⚠️ The practical consequence is worth acting on: if there are three damaged spots on a house, having them done in one visit is the single cheapest decision available here, and cutting a patch back to a clean rectangle rather than an irregular shape is what makes it $1,683 of section repair rather than an argument.
Silica, lead paint, and where the water was actually getting in
Cutting or grinding cured stucco releases respirable crystalline silica — OSHA, Crystalline Silica, retrieved 2026-08-24 — which is why a crew doing this properly cuts wet or uses dust extraction, and why a household dust mask is not the answer. In a house built before 1978, cutting into painted render disturbs painted surface, and outdoors the threshold in EPA, Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Program (retrieved 2026-08-24) is twenty square feet, which a section repair passes easily: $1,912 instead of $1,310 here. And if what is found behind a synthetic wall is wet sheathing, EPA, Mold Cleanup in Your Home (retrieved 2026-08-24) sets out what that becomes. ⚠️ None of which is the most important thing on this page: stucco very rarely fails on its own. It fails where water gets behind it — a window head, a roof-to-wall junction, a missing kickout flashing, a failed sealant joint — and repairing the render without fixing the source buys a couple of years at full price. Wages from BLS OEWS, May 2025, retrieved 2026-08-20, benefit-loaded from BLS ECEC. ⚠️ This project’s regional index carries no plasterer occupation, so the model uses brickmasons — the nearest trade it does carry. The regional multiplier is the strong part of the model and the absolute rate the weak one, and here more than elsewhere.
Material prices
Modelled estimates, not sourced prices. No public, machine-readable source of US residential material prices exists, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Each line carries its own uncertainty band. How we estimate them.

What this figure does not include

Whatever is letting the water in
⚠️ The single most important exclusion on this page. Stucco very rarely fails on its own: it fails where water gets behind it, and that is almost always a window head, a roof-to-wall junction, a missing kickout flashing or a failed sealant joint. Repairing the render without fixing the source buys a couple of years at full price.
Rotten sheathing or framing behind the wall
The investigation line prices finding out. What to do about it, if the answer is bad, is carpentry and it is not modelled here — and on a synthetic wall that has been wet for years it can be the larger half of the project.
Stucco over an entire house
Rendering a house that is not rendered, or replacing a whole wall system, is new construction rather than repair. Different quantities, different schedule, different price per square foot.
Mould behind the wall
Where a synthetic wall has held water against sheathing, what is found is sometimes a remediation job. Our mold remediation page prices that side of it.
An exact colour match
Nobody can promise one, and a quote that does should be read carefully. Integral colour, thirty years of sun and a hand-applied texture do not reproduce. Re-coating or repainting the elevation is the way to get a uniform wall, and both are priced above.
What your insurance will pay
Sudden damage and long-term water entry are treated differently by most policies, and which one a wet wall counts as is decided on your wall. This page prices work; it does not advise on a claim.

Questions people actually ask

Are stucco repairs expensive?

Expensive per square foot and cheap in total, which is why the quotes surprise people. A 40 square foot patch on a traditional wall at ground level is $1,310 on this model in Atlanta — $957 to $1,664 — and that works out at $32.76 a square foot, while re-coating a whole 500 square foot elevation is $3,212, or $6.42. ⚠️ The reason is that traditional stucco is applied in coats that each have to cure before the next one goes on, so a small repair is three visits to a wall regardless of how small it is. Height compounds that, because the access has to stay up in between: the same patch is $2,329 on a second storey and $3,692 on a third.

Can I do stucco repair myself?

Filling hairline cracks, yes — that is $694 of work here and mostly patience. Patching, honestly, is where amateur repairs are recognisable from the pavement, because matching a hand-applied texture is a skill rather than a technique and the colour of traditional stucco is in the mix rather than on top. ⚠️ Two safety points that are not scare stories. Cutting or grinding cured stucco releases respirable crystalline silica, which OSHA regulates for exactly that reason and which a household dust mask does not stop. And if the house was built before 1978, cutting into painted render disturbs painted surface: outdoors the federal threshold is twenty square feet, which a section repair passes easily. On this model that turns $1,310 into $1,912 because of how the work has to be contained and cleaned up.

Can a handyman repair stucco?

For hairline cracks and small holes, a competent general tradesperson is fine. For anything that has to match, the honest answer is that this is a plastering trade and it shows: the lace or knockdown and smooth troweled finishes in particular depend almost entirely on the hand applying them, which is why the same materials give different walls. ⚠️ And there is one question that decides whether a handyman is the right call at all: which system the wall is. Traditional three-coat over metal lath is forgiving, and a patch is a patch. A synthetic EIFS wall does not breathe, so the crack is rarely the job — what matters is whether water has been sitting against the sheathing behind it, and that needs meter readings and an opening rather than a filler. On this model that investigation is $860 on top and it is the item worth insisting on.

Will homeowners insurance cover stucco repair?

This page prices work and does not advise on claims, so the useful thing we can tell you is the distinction the question usually turns on: policies generally treat sudden, accidental damage differently from gradual deterioration and from maintenance. A branch through the wall is one kind of event. Cracking that has widened over fifteen years, or a synthetic wall that has been quietly wet since a sealant joint failed, is usually read as the other. ⚠️ Which of those a wet wall counts as is decided on your wall and in your policy wording, by your insurer, and it often depends on evidence of when the water started — which is one more reason the moisture investigation line here is worth having done and documented before anything is patched over. Take the readings, keep the photographs, and ask your insurer rather than a contractor what they mean.
