Vinyl Plank Flooring Installation Cost Calculator
Vinyl plank flooring installation cost runs about $7,600 for a thousand square feet in Atlanta, fitted and with the old floor taken away. The number that moves it is not the brand: it is the wear layer, the clear film on top measured in mils. The same floor is $6,061 at 6 mil and $9,706 at 20. That figure is on the box, and it is the only part a shoe ever touches.

The one input that changes the answer for you.
The planks lock to each other and to nothing else. Faster to fit, forgiving of a subfloor that is not perfect, and it can be lifted again. It also sounds hollower underfoot, which is what the underlayment is for.
A wood subfloor over a crawl space or a basement. Flatness is the thing to check; moisture is rarely the issue.
A floating floor copies whatever is under it. Manufacturers ask for about three sixteenths of an inch over ten feet, and an older house rarely gives that everywhere. Nobody can see the dips until the old floor is up, which is why this is the commonest extra on the final invoice.
15% of the floor — that is $435 of this estimate.
Every tread edge needs a matching bullnose profile, and that profile costs several times what the plank does per foot. It is the most under-quoted part of this job.

The number on the box that decides it
Not the plank thickness, which is what gets advertised. The wear layer: the clear film on top, and the only part a shoe ever touches.
The residential workhorse and the sensible default for a whole house. Most manufacturer warranties step up meaningfully at this thickness.

Where these numbers come from
- Labour rates by area
- BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025, for floor layers, carpenters and labourers. Retrieved 2026-08-20. The caveat we will not hide: BLS publishes a floor layer wage for only 86 of the 530 areas in our index, so across most of the country that hour is priced from the broader construction group for your own area instead. Benefit load from BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation.
- A label to look for on the trim and the core
- Baseboard is usually MDF, and some rigid-core plank has a wood-polymer core. Both are composite wood products, and since March 2019 those have had to be labelled as TSCA Title VI compliant for formaldehyde emissions — see EPA, Formaldehyde Emission Standards for Composite Wood Products, which names hardwood plywood, MDF and particleboard along with finished goods containing them. It is a label on the bundle and it costs nothing to check. The limits behind that label are published as numbers in 40 CFR 770, Formaldehyde Standards for Composite Wood Products: 0.05 ppm for hardwood plywood, 0.11 for medium-density fibreboard and 0.09 for particleboard. Both retrieved 2026-08-22.
- The first few weeks
- New flooring and its adhesive give off volatile organic compounds for a period after fitting, and a glue-down floor more than a floating one. EPA, Volatile Organic Compounds’ Impact on Indoor Air Quality sets out what they are and what ventilation does. Named here rather than priced, because the answer is opening windows. Retrieved 2026-08-22.
- Before lifting an old floor in an old house
- Nine-by-nine vinyl tile and the black mastic under it can contain asbestos in anything built before the eighties, and so can some sheet flooring backings. Lifting it is precisely what not to do until it has been tested — see EPA, Protect Your Family from Exposures to Asbestos. It is not priced here at any figure. Retrieved 2026-08-22.
- Material prices
- Modelled estimates, not sourced prices. No public, machine-readable source of US residential material prices exists, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Each line carries its own uncertainty band. How we estimate them.

What this figure does not include
- What a big-box retailer charges to install
- Retail installation is delivered by independent contractors under a national programme and the price is set market by market. We do not publish a figure we cannot source. The floor layer hours above, at the wage published for your own area, are what any quote should be measured against.
- Which brand is best
- We do not rank brands and we have nothing to rank them with. What is on the box and is worth comparing is the wear layer in mils, which is the only part of the plank that meets a shoe, and the warranty terms that go with it. That comparison is objective; a brand ranking would not be.
- Asbestos in the old floor
- Nine-by-nine vinyl tile, some old sheet flooring and the black mastic under either can contain asbestos in houses built before the eighties. Lifting it is exactly the wrong thing to do until it has been tested. See the EPA on asbestos in the home. It is not priced here at any figure, because a cheap number would be a dangerous one.
- Structural repair of the floor
- The levelling line skims and pours over a floor that is sound but uneven. A floor that bounces, a sagging joist or rot under a long-running leak is structural work, it has to be fixed before anything goes on top, and it is not in these figures.
- Radiant heat under the floor
- Electric mat or hydronic tube under vinyl plank has its own temperature limits set by the plank manufacturer, and exceeding them is how a floor gaps in winter. It is a separate job with its own electrical work.
- Permits
- No jurisdiction we know of requires a permit to replace a floor covering.
Questions people actually ask
How much does it cost to install 1000 square feet of vinyl plank flooring?
About $7,600 in Atlanta for a thousand square feet in a 12 mil wear layer, floating over a wood subfloor, with the old floor lifted and taken away, the furniture moved, the doors undercut and shoe moulding round the edge. That is $8 a square foot for the whole job, and it is deliberately not comparable to the three-dollar figures advertised, which are usually material and fitting only. The same floor in a 6 mil wear layer is $6,061 and in 20 mil it is $9,706. Glued down onto a concrete slab it is $8,446, because a bonded floor on concrete needs a moisture test before anything sticks to it.
Which brand of vinyl plank flooring is best?
We do not rank brands and we have nothing honest to rank them with. There is a better question and its answer is printed on the box: the wear layer, measured in mils. That is the clear film on top and it is the only part of the plank a shoe ever touches. Six mil is light residential, twelve is the sensible whole-house default, twenty is light commercial and worth it in an entry or a kitchen. What most people compare instead is the total plank thickness in millimetres, which is the number advertised in large type and which tells you almost nothing about wear: an 8 mm plank with a 6 mil layer will scratch before a 5 mm plank with 20. On this thousand square feet the wear layer alone moves the job from $6,061 to $9,706.
What are the downsides of vinyl plank flooring?
Four, and nobody selling it will lead with them. It cannot be refinished: when the wear layer is through, the floor is finished, where a solid wood floor would be sanded. It fades in sustained direct sun, so a south-facing conservatory is the wrong room for it. A floating floor sounds hollow underfoot compared with something bonded, which is what the underlayment is trying to soften. And "waterproof" describes the plank, not the floor: water that finds a seam sits on the subfloor underneath and has no way out, which is why a burst pipe under vinyl plank can be worse than one under tile. Against that, it is hard-wearing, genuinely easy to live with, and the reason it has taken over.
How much does Home Depot charge to install a vinyl floor?
Retail installation is delivered by independent contractors under a national programme and the price varies by market, so we do not publish a number we cannot source. What is offered instead is the labour at the wage published for your own area: $2,262 of the $7,600 above. Two questions are worth asking anyone who quotes. What happens to the price if the subfloor turns out not to be flat — on this job, levelling fifteen per cent of the floor is the difference between $7,216 and $7,600, and nobody can see the dips until the old floor is up. And is the quoted price for the plank you were shown, at the wear layer you were shown, because that is where a low bid usually hides.

Resin is sold by the gallon and its coverage is arithmetic, not marketing. Prices three systems that share one word, and says which preparation decides whether any of them lasts.

Shows why two tiling quotes differ by double: it is the substrate underneath, not the tile. Also prices the format, which drives the hours more than anything else.
