Sump Pump Replacement Cost Calculator
Sump pump replacement cost runs about $790 for a straight swap and $1,800 with a battery backup. That gap is the whole decision. A pump without a backup stops when the power does, and the storm that fills a basement is usually the storm that cuts the power — which is why Ready.gov tells homeowners to consider a sump pump with a battery. Everything else here is small by comparison.

- Why the backup is not an optional extra
- Federal preparedness guidance is unusually direct about this. Under what to do before a flood, Ready.gov (FEMA), Floods lists “consider a sump pump with a battery” alongside buying flood insurance. It is listed as preparation, not as an upgrade. Retrieved 2026-08-22.
- What the pump is actually fighting
- A sump pump does not stop water arriving; it moves water that has already reached the level of your footing. Whether that happens after every storm or once a decade depends on the water table under the house, which moves seasonally and, in many areas, over the long term. USGS Water Science School, Groundwater decline and depletion covers how and why those levels change. Retrieved 2026-08-22.
- Why a sealed lid is worth the money
- The EPA describes the standard radon-resistant floor as a layer of coarse gravel under the slab, sheeting over it, and a vent pipe drawing from that layer — see EPA, Radon-Resistant Construction Basics and Techniques. A sump pit is an opening into that same gravel layer. Drawing our own conclusion rather than the EPA’s: in a finished basement, an unsealed pit is a hole in the floor, and a sealed lid is the cheapest line in this whole estimate. Retrieved 2026-08-22.
- Material prices
- Modelled estimates, not sourced prices. No public, machine-readable source of US residential material prices exists, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Each line carries its own uncertainty band. How we estimate them.

What this figure does not include
- Fixing why the water is there
- A sump pump manages groundwater; it does not stop it arriving. If the cause is grading that falls towards the house, blocked gutters or a failed footing drain, the pump is treating a symptom and will keep doing so until it fails again.
- Permit fees
- Some jurisdictions require an electrical permit for the circuit and some regulate where the discharge may go. Fees vary with no national source and are excluded rather than averaged.
- Battery replacement
- A backup battery is a consumable with a three-to-five year life. This is an installation figure, not a cost of ownership.
- Emergency call-out premiums
- Sump pumps are usually discovered to have failed during a storm, and out-of-hours work is charged accordingly. These figures assume scheduled work, which is an argument for replacing one before it fails.
- Water damage already done
- Drying, dehumidification and replacing what the water reached are separate work.
Questions people actually ask
How much does a plumber charge to put in a new sump pump?
Labour alone is usually three hours for a straight swap, and this calculator prices those hours at the plumber wage published for your metropolitan area rather than a national average. Expect roughly $300 to $600 in labour across most of the country, with the pump, check valve and discharge work on top. A basin replacement pushes it to about five hours, and a backup system adds two more because it has its own float, its own pipework and its own testing.
Do you need a plumber to replace a sump pump?
For the pump itself, no jurisdiction we know of requires one. The electrical side is different: where a dedicated circuit has to be run, most places require a licensed electrician and a permit, and a sump pump genuinely should not share a breaker with anything else. The discharge is worth a professional eye too, because a pipe that dumps water three feet from the foundation returns it to the pit within the hour and the pump then runs until it burns out.
How many years should a sump pump last?
Seven to ten years is the usual span, and it is a poor guide to when yours will fail because the failure is rarely gradual. Pumps sit idle for months and then run continuously for two days, which is the duty cycle that kills them. The more useful habit is pouring a bucket of water into the pit twice a year and watching it start, stop and hold. A pump that has passed ten years is worth replacing before a storm rather than during one, when out-of-hours rates apply.
Can you replace a sump pump yourself?
The mechanical work is within reach of a confident homeowner: isolate the power, unclamp the discharge, lift the old pump out, set the new one level, fit a check valve and test it. Two things argue against it. Sizing is not obvious, because the right horsepower depends on how high the water has to be lifted and how far it has to travel, not on the size of the basement. And a pump that short cycles is usually telling you the float or the pit is wrong, so a new pump will repeat the fault.

- French drain installation cost
Prices all three drains that share the name separately, per foot, because a yard drain and a footing drain differ by more than double.
- Mold remediation cost
Sizes the job by affected area against the EPA’s ten-square-foot threshold, and says plainly when the honest answer is that you can do it yourself.
- Tile installation cost
Shows why two tiling quotes differ by double: it is the substrate underneath, not the tile. Also prices the format, which drives the hours more than anything else.
