Sump pump cost dataset

This is the complete dataset behind the sump pump calculator. Most of it is unremarkable — a pump, a valve, some pipe, a few hours of labour. One line is not, and it is the reason this page exists: the backup roughly doubles the total, and every cost guide we read lists it last, as an optional extra. Last reviewed 2026-08-22.

What the backup actually costs

National figures, before any regional adjustment, for a 1/2 HP pump with the discharge redone and an alarm fitted.

Total cost modelled by backup type
BackupTypicalRangeAdded
No backup$808$479–$1,137—
Battery backup$1,821$1,078–$2,565+$1,014
Water-powered backup$1,586$958–$2,215+$779

A water-powered backup is cheaper to fit and has no battery to replace, but it needs municipal water pressure. On a private well it is useless, because the well pump is off in the same outage. That constraint decides the choice more often than price does.

How pump size is priced

The pump line is priced per horsepower rather than as four separate products, so the model stays honest about what it knows: bigger pumps cost more, roughly in proportion.

Pump sizes modelled and when each is used
SizeWhen it is the right choice
1 HPRarely needed in a house. Usually a sign the real problem is drainage outside.
1/3 HPEnough for most basements with a normal water table.
1/2 HPThe usual choice where the discharge run is long or the lift is high.
3/4 HPHigh water table, or a deep basement with a long vertical lift.

Sizing properly depends on how high the water must be lifted and how far it must travel, not on the size of the basement. A calculator cannot see either, so these are the usual choices rather than a recommendation.

Labour hours modelled

The wages behind these hours are official BLS figures for your metropolitan area. The hours themselves are our estimate, and they are the assumption most worth arguing with.

Line items

The two backup lines are alternatives, never both. Optional lines appear only when the corresponding answer is yes.

The reasoning behind each figure

Written out so a plumber can point at the exact assumption that is wrong. A number with no reasoning behind it cannot be corrected.

Sump pumpestimated, ±47%
  • Priced per horsepower, so a half-horsepower pump lands around $130 to $360 for the unit alone.
  • The band separates thermoplastic housings at the bottom from cast iron at the top. Cast iron sheds heat into the water instead of holding it, which is most of why it lasts longer.
  • Manufactured goods shipped nationally: geography barely touches this line.
Check valve and couplingsestimated, ±52%
  • Stops the column of water in the discharge pipe falling back into the pit every time the pump shuts off. Without one the pump re-pumps the same water and cycles far more than it should.
  • A silent or spring-loaded valve sits at the top of the band and is worth it if the pit is under a bedroom.
Discharge pipe, fittings and outletestimated, ±56%
  • Rigid pipe from the pit to outside, with the outlet far enough from the house that the water does not simply come back. The band reflects how far that is.
  • Where the run leaves through a rim joist rather than reusing an existing penetration, it sits at the top of the band.
Sump basin and lidestimated, ±54%
  • Only where the pit itself is being replaced, which usually means it has collapsed or was never lined properly.
  • A sealed lid is worth the top of the band in a finished basement: it keeps radon and humidity out of the room.
Battery backup pump, battery and chargerestimated, ±46%
  • A complete second pump with its own float, a deep-cycle battery and a smart charger. This is not an accessory: it roughly doubles the cost of the job.
  • It is also the only line here that addresses the actual failure mode, because the storm that fills the basement is usually the storm that cuts the power.
  • The battery is a consumable and needs replacing every three to five years, which is a running cost this figure does not include.
Water-powered backup pumpestimated, ±45%
  • Drives an ejector off mains water pressure, so it runs indefinitely with no battery to maintain. Needs a municipal supply: it will not work on a well, because the well pump is also off.
  • Uses treated drinking water to move groundwater, which some jurisdictions restrict and which shows on the water bill after a long storm.
High-water alarmestimated, ±58%
  • Sounds when the water rises above the level the pump should have cleared. The cheapest insurance on this page by a wide margin.
  • The top of the band is a connected unit that will message a phone, which is what makes it useful when nobody is home.
Dedicated GFCI circuitestimated, ±51%
  • A sump pump should be on its own circuit, protected, and not sharing with anything that could trip it. Many older basements have it plugged into a shared outlet, which is how people find out the breaker went days ago.
Electrician
  • Only where a circuit has to be run. Metro-adjusted wage from official BLS data; the hours are our estimate.
Plumber: remove, set, pipe and test
  • Three hours for a straight swap, five where the basin is replaced, and two more on top for a backup system with its own float and pipework.
  • The wage is official BLS data adjusted to your metropolitan area. The hours are our estimate.
Remove and dispose of the old pumpestimated, ±52%
  • A small line, listed because it appears on real invoices and because a pump that has sat in groundwater for a decade is not something a contractor puts in a van willingly.

Not included in this dataset

Fixing why the water is there
A sump pump manages groundwater; it does not stop it arriving. If the cause is grading that falls towards the house, blocked gutters or a failed footing drain, the pump is treating a symptom and will keep doing so until it fails again.
Permit fees
Some jurisdictions require an electrical permit for the circuit and some regulate where the discharge may go. Fees vary with no national source and are excluded rather than averaged.
Battery replacement
A backup battery is a consumable with a three-to-five year life. This is an installation figure, not a cost of ownership.
Emergency call-out premiums
Sump pumps are usually discovered to have failed during a storm, and out-of-hours work is charged accordingly. These figures assume scheduled work, which is an argument for replacing one before it fails.
Water damage already done
Drying, dehumidification and replacing what the water reached are separate work.
