Laminate Floor Installation Cost Calculator
A laminate floor runs about $6,327 in Atlanta — $4,604 to $8,050, or $6.33 a square foot — for 1,000 square feet of AC4 at 8 mm over a wood subfloor, with the carpet taken up. ⚠️ Only $3.59 of that is board and fitting: the other 43% is underlayment, transitions, tear-out, levelling and trim, which is the part an advertised price per square foot leaves out.

Laminate or vinyl plank, grade for grade
The same job — your area, your rooms, your subfloor, your tear-out — through both of this site’s models at the same BLS wages.
| Grade | Laminate | Vinyl plank | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| EntryAC3 · 6 mil | $5,803 | $6,511 | $708 less |
| MidAC4 · 12 mil | $6,771 | $8,050 | $1,279 less |
| HeavyAC5 · 20 mil | $8,091 | $10,156 | $2,065 less |
“Is it cheaper to install laminate or vinyl?” is one of the questions Google shows on this search, and on these two models laminate is cheaper at all three grades, and the gap widens as you go up — $708 at entry level and $2,065 at the top. ⚠️ But watch the trap that produces the opposite answer everywhere else: the cheapest vinyl plank is $6,511, which undercuts mid-grade laminate at $6,771. That comparison is real and it is also two different purchases. One more thing no comparison mentions: vinyl plank comes in a glued-down version and laminate does not. Laminate always floats, so it always needs underlayment — part of the price gap is a line item one of them cannot remove.
⚠️ Carpet is deliberately not a row here, and the reason is measurable. Carpet comes off a fixed-width roll, so its price depends on the shape of the rooms as well as their area: over 7 room proportions from square to two-and-a-half to one, at identical square footage, carpet ranges $5,637 to $7,146 — a swing of $1,509, or 27%. That is more than the $1,279 this table exists to show, so a shape we would have had to assume for you would outweigh the answer. Laminate and vinyl plank are both cut from planks rather than off a roll, so shape does not drive them the same way — this model derives the perimeter treating each room as square, and shape moves only the trim line. Carpet has its own page, priced by room dimensions, which is how it is actually sold.

Two of the four questions Google shows on this search ask what a big-box retailer charges to fit laminate. We do not publish another company’s price list — we do not know it — but there is a better answer than a number, and this is it: 44% of what this floor costs is not in a price per square foot. None of the lines above is padding and none of them is optional in the way it sounds: laminate cannot be laid without underlayment, a floating floor cannot run through a doorway without a transition, the old floor has to leave the house, and the expansion gap has to be covered by something. ⚠️ The useful thing to do with an advertised figure is therefore not to compare it against ours, it is to take this list to whoever quoted it and ask which of these lines are in and which are extra. The difference between two honest quotes is nearly always this list rather than the board.
By size, and why the rate falls
| How much floor | Hours | Per sq ft | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| One 12 × 12 room | 16 | $10.30 | $1,483 |
| 400 sq ft | 26 | $7.62 | $3,048 |
| 500 sq ft | 29 | $7.14 | $3,571 |
| 1,000 sq ft | 51 | $6.77 | $6,771 |
| 1,500 sq ft | 73 | $6.65 | $9,969 |
Seven of the twenty questions Google shows across this cluster are the same question with a different number in it — a 12 × 12 room, 400 square feet, 500, 1,000, 1,500. Here they all are, and the shape of the column that matters is the third one: the rate per square foot falls from $10.30 to $6.65 as the job gets bigger. That is not a discount and nobody is being generous: setting out, getting the crew and the tools there, and the minimum they will come out for do not scale with the floor. ⚠️ It is why a single-room quote looks so expensive per foot, why doing the hall at the same time as the sitting room is much better value than doing it next year, and why the honest way to compare two quotes is total price for the same rooms rather than the rate.

Where these numbers come from
- The thinner board is allowed to emit more
- This is the one fact on the page that came out of a regulation rather than a price list, and it is the opposite of what anybody assumes. A laminate floor’s core is fibreboard — wood, not plastic — so it is a composite wood product and the federal formaldehyde standards apply to it. 40 CFR 770, Formaldehyde Standards for Composite Wood Products (read 2026-08-24) sets 0.11 ppm for medium-density fibreboard and 0.13 ppm for “thin” fibreboard, meaning 8 mm or less. Laminate is sold at 7, 8, 10 and 12 mm, so the two commonest and cheapest thicknesses sit in the class permitted the higher figure. ⚠️ Neither number is an alarm — both are limits, and the rule is strict about who may certify against them. What is worth knowing in the aisle is the other half of the same section: it applies whether the fibreboard is a panel, a component, or already built into a finished floor, so a laminate sold in the United States should carry a TSCA Title VI compliance label. One that does not is the box to put down. The plain-language version is at EPA, Formaldehyde Emission Standards for Composite Wood Products (retrieved 2026-08-24). Going from 7 mm to 12 mm on this job is $1,194.
- Against vinyl plank, and the comparison that gets it backwards
- “Is it cheaper to install laminate or vinyl?” is asked on three of the five keywords in this cluster, so this page answers it with the same job through both of our models at the same wages rather than with an opinion. Laminate is cheaper at all three matched grades — $702 less at entry, $1,273 in the middle and $2,059 at the top. ⚠️ The reason the internet says the opposite is that it compares the cheapest vinyl against sensible laminate: $6,061 against $6,327, which is true and is two different purchases. Two things this table cannot show you. First, laminate has no glued-down version — it always floats, so it always needs underlayment, and part of the gap is a line one of them cannot delete. Second, and more important than the money: the core is wood. Wipe a spill up and nothing happens; leave water standing at a joint and the board swells permanently. A water-resistant core is $715 more here and it buys hours, not immunity. For a bathroom the right answer is a different floor, and our vinyl plank and tile pages price both.
- What the quote does not say, and what is under the floor
- The gap between $3.59 and $6.33 a square foot is where every argument about a flooring quote actually lives, and almost all of it is decided by what is already on the floor. Starting from bare subfloor is $5,691; the same floor with tile to break out and thinset to grind off is $8,221. ⚠️ Two of those tear-outs carry something that is not about money. Grinding tile or a slab releases respirable crystalline silica — OSHA, Crystalline Silica (retrieved 2026-08-24) — which a hardware-store mask does not handle, so asking a crew what dust control they bring is a fair question. And resilient flooring from before about 1990 can contain asbestos, released by exactly what a tear-out does: EPA, Asbestos (retrieved 2026-08-24). Testing is the cheapest line in this whole dataset and the only one that can change what the job is — and a positive result very often means the right answer is to leave the old floor down and float over it. Cutting the new boards has its own version of this: OSHA, Wood dust hazards (retrieved 2026-08-24) — fibreboard cut indoors without extraction leaves the dust in your house.
- Where the numbers come from
- Labour is official: wages from BLS OEWS for floor layers, carpenters and construction labourers, May 2025, retrieved 2026-08-20, adjusted to your metro area and benefit-loaded from BLS ECEC. 64% of the total is estimated rather than official — there is no federal price series for a box of laminate — and every band and its reasoning is on the dataset page. ⚠️ Two declared choices worth knowing about. The board is priced by abrasion class at a 7 mm reference, with thickness as its own line, so you can see what thickness costs instead of it vanishing into one number; the abrasion classes themselves are a manufacturer’s label under a privately published standard that we name but do not reproduce. And carpet is deliberately absent from the comparison above: over 7 room proportions at identical square footage it swings $1,514 — 27% — because it comes off a fixed-width roll, which is more than the difference the comparison exists to show. Plank floors do not behave that way, and this model says how it treats the difference: the perimeter that decides the trim is derived treating each room as square. It is priced properly, by room dimensions, on our carpet installation page, and the whole approach is on the method page.
- Material prices
- Modelled estimates, not sourced prices. No public, machine-readable source of US residential material prices exists, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Each line carries its own uncertainty band. How we estimate them.
Contractor overhead and profit applied at 33–43% over direct cost. Data last reviewed 2026-08-24.
What this figure does not include
- Asbestos abatement
- ⚠️ If the old resilient floor tests positive, removing it is licensed work with its own rules, and it is not priced here. What is priced here is the test, because the test is what tells you which job you are buying. Very often the cheapest and safest answer is to leave the old floor down and float the new one over it.
- Painting the new trim
- New baseboard is priced primed. Painting is a different trade and it is on our interior painting page, where it is priced by the room rather than folded into a flooring quote where nobody can see it.
- Whatever caused the subfloor damage
- The panels and the hours to replace rotten subfloor are here; the leak, the missing crawl space vapour barrier or the shower pan that was never right are not. Putting a new floor over an unfixed cause buys the same job again in three years, and those causes have their own pages here.
- Radiant heat underneath
- Laminate can go over warm floors within limits the board manufacturer sets — a maximum surface temperature and a warm-up schedule — and exceeding them is how a floating floor gets gaps that close again in summer. It is a real project with its own design and it is not modelled here.
- Bathrooms and laundries
- The honest exclusion. A water-resistant core buys you time against a spill, not against a leak, and water that gets under a floating floor stays there. This page prices laminate for the rooms where it belongs; for a bathroom the right answer is tile or sheet vinyl, and both have pages here.
- Furniture that has to be disconnected
- Moving ordinary furniture is priced. Unplumbing a washing machine, disconnecting a cooker or shifting a piano is not — those are separate trades or separate specialists, and a flooring crew quoting for them is quoting for something they do not do.
Questions people actually ask
How much does it cost to put laminate flooring in a 12x12 room?
About $1,343 in Atlanta for a 12 × 12 room — 144 square feet — in AC4 at 8 mm, over a wood subfloor, with the carpet taken up. ⚠️ That works out at $9.33 a square foot against $6.33 for the same specification over 1,000 square feet, and the difference is not a discount: setting out, getting a crew and their tools to the house, and the minimum they will come out for do not scale with the floor. It is the single most useful thing to know before ringing anybody — one room is the worst value per foot there is, and adding the hall while they are there costs far less than doing it next year.
How much does it cost to install 1000 sq ft of laminate?
$6,327 on this model in Atlanta — $6.33 a square foot all in — for AC4 at 8 mm over a wood subfloor, with carpet taken up, 15% of the floor levelled, transitions, shoe moulding and the furniture moved. $9,336 for 1,500. ⚠️ The number that matters more than the total is the split: only $3.59 of that is board and fitting. The other 43% is underlayment, transitions, tear-out, disposal, levelling, trim and undercutting doors — all of it necessary, and most of it absent from an advertised price per square foot.
Is it cheaper to install laminate or vinyl?
Grade for grade, laminate — and the gap widens as you go up. Through this site's two models on the same job at the same BLS wages: $5,359 against $6,061 at entry level, $6,327 against $7,600 in the middle, $7,647 against $9,706 at the top. ⚠️ The reason you will read the opposite is a mismatched comparison: the cheapest vinyl plank at $6,061 does undercut mid-grade laminate at $6,327, but those are two different purchases. And the honest caveat runs the other way: laminate is cheaper and its core is wood, so it swells where vinyl does not. Cheaper is not the same as right for a kitchen.
How much does Lowes charge to install laminate floors?
We do not publish another company's price list, because we do not know it and inventing one would be the least useful thing on this page. ⚠️ What is worth more than that number is knowing what shape it has: a retailer's fitting price is a rate per square foot plus a list of per-item charges, and on this job the per-item part is 43% of the total — $2,740 of $6,327. Take our itemised list to whoever quoted you and ask which lines are in and which are extra: underlayment, transitions per doorway, tear-out and disposal of the old floor, levelling, trim, undercutting the door casings, moving furniture. The difference between two honest quotes is nearly always that list rather than the board.
