Tree Trimming Cost Calculator
Tree trimming costs about $741 for a 40-foot tree in a suburban garden in Atlanta, and $555 for a 20-foot one. The thing worth knowing before you ask for a quote is what you are paying for: the climb, not the wood. A crown reduction takes nearly the same hours whether a tenth or a quarter of the canopy comes off. And pruning is 55% of felling the same tree, from our own two models.

The one input that changes the answer for you.
Dead, dying, diseased and crossing branches out, and nothing living removed for shape. It is the standard maintenance prune and what a good arborist will suggest if you ask for "a trim".
Beds, a fence, a shed. Larger pieces are lowered on a rope rather than dropped, and the drop zone is moved as the climber works round.
Fine for light work and for deadwood, which is easiest to spot when everything else is green. Peak demand, full canopy, more debris to chip. ⚠️ Some species should not be pruned in spring at all — oaks in much of the country, because of disease spread — so ask before booking.

The figure above is already calculated. Each step just makes it more yours, and you can stop at any of them.
You are paying for the climb, not for the wood
The same tree, five different jobs. Look at how little the price moves against how different the work is.
| Job | Crew hours | Chip | One tree |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deadwood removal only | 2.1 | 1.2 cu yd | $650 |
| Crown clean | 2.8 | 1.7 cu yd | $763 |
| Crown thin | 3.5 | 2.2 cu yd | $876 |
| Crown raise | 2.5 | 1.6 cu yd | $718 |
| Crown reduction | 4 | 2.6 cu yd | $959 |
| Clearance from a roof or a building | 2.4 | 1.4 cu yd | $698 |
A crown reduction takes nearly the same hours whether a tenth or a quarter of the canopy comes off, because what costs is getting a climber to every extremity. How much you take changes the chip volume, which is the small column. The practical consequence: if somebody is going up, use the trip. Asking for deadwood and a thin in the same visit costs far less than asking for them in two.
Prune it, or take it down?
Felling this tree outright comes to $1,402 from our tree removal model, against $763 to prune it — 54%. Both figures share the same wage data and the same regional adjustment, so the ratio means something. Pruning wins on price and it wins by more the bigger and more awkward the tree, because felling has to bring the whole mass down past whatever is underneath. It stops being the answer when the tree is structurally unsound, in the wrong place entirely, or when what is being asked for is really a reduction in height — for which pruning has an honest answer and topping does not.

Where these numbers come from
- Why the amount you take off barely changes the price
- On this tree a deadwood clean is $632, a crown clean $741, a clearance from the roof $678 and a full crown reduction $930 — a spread of well under two to one across jobs that remove very different amounts of wood. What costs is getting a climber to every extremity of the canopy and moving them round it on rope. How much comes off changes the chip volume, which is the small line. The practical consequence is worth acting on: if somebody is going up, use the trip — deadwood and a thin in one visit costs far less than the same two a year apart.
- The timing question, answered in the right order
- Dormant-season pruning is better for the tree: the structure is visible without leaves, the cuts close as growth starts, and most pathogens are inactive. It is also cheaper, at $689 against $741, because there is a third less material to chip and crews are quieter. Those two facts point the same way, which is unusual and worth taking advantage of. ⚠️ Ask about your species before booking spring work: oaks in much of the country should not be pruned then, because fresh wounds in the growing season are how the disease moves.
- What this calculator will not price, and why
- Topping — cutting main stems back to stubs to bring a tree’s height down. It permanently damages the tree: the regrowth is weakly attached and starts breaking within a few years, and wounds on large-diameter cuts do not close over. It is the one request in this trade where the cheapest quote is cheap because the work is wrong. If a tree is genuinely too tall for where it stands, the two honest answers are a reduction back to proper growing points, which this page prices, and removal, which our tree removal calculator does.

The canopy index and the machine band are our estimate, and the machine band is not presented as a FEMA figure for the reason set out on our tree removal page.
- The wire, and the free option behind it
- Nobody unqualified may take a tool or a branch inside the minimum approach distance of an energised conductor — the substance of OSHA 1910.269, Electric power generation, transmission and distribution. On a pruning job this is more often good news than on a felling: clearing vegetation from their own lines is exactly what a utility does, routinely and at no cost to you. One phone call before paying anybody. Retrieved 2026-08-23.
- Why the cheap quote is cheap
- OSHA, Tree care operations covers what this work involves, and pruning puts somebody in a tree on rope with a running saw. A groundworker or a climber hurt on your property is your problem before it is anybody else’s, so ask for the certificate of insurance from the company rather than the assurance from the person quoting. Ready.gov, Severe weather covers preparing for the storms that make this work urgent — and the calmest time to choose a company is before one. On a big awkward tree this page puts the job at $1,682, which is not a figure anybody should be improvising with. Both retrieved 2026-08-23.
- Material prices
- Modelled estimates, not sourced prices. No public, machine-readable source of US residential material prices exists, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Each line carries its own uncertainty band. How we estimate them.

What this figure does not include
- Topping, and anything that looks like it
- ⚠️ Cutting main stems back to stubs to reduce height permanently damages a tree: the regrowth is weakly attached and breaks within a few years, and the wounds on large-diameter cuts do not close. It is not priced here because it should not be done. If a tree is genuinely too big for its place, reduction to proper growing points or removal are the two honest answers.
- Diagnosis and treatment
- Deciding what is wrong with a tree, testing for decay, treating a pest or assessing whether it is likely to fail are all consultancy by a qualified arborist rather than pruning work, and they are priced by the visit rather than by the tree.
- Cabling and bracing
- Hardware installed to support a weak union or a heavy limb is a separate specialty with its own inspection schedule. It is sometimes the right alternative to a reduction and it is not in these figures.
- The stump and the tree itself
- This page prunes. If the answer turns out to be removal, our tree removal calculator prices that, and our stump grinding calculator prices what is left.
- Permits and protected trees
- Some jurisdictions regulate pruning as well as removal, particularly on street trees and protected species, and a few require a permit for work above a certain proportion of the canopy. It varies completely by locality and one phone call settles it.
Questions people actually ask
How much does it cost to trim a 20 foot tree?
About $555 in Atlanta for a crown clean — dead, dying and crossing branches out — in a suburban garden, in a range of $377 to $734. A 40-foot tree is $741. The jump is not proportional to the height because it is not really about height: it is about how much canopy a climber has to work round, and a canopy grows with the square of its radius. And note where the floor is — a fair part of that $555 is the crew and the chipper turning up at all, which costs the same whatever they prune when they get there.
Is it cheaper to trim a tree or cut it down?
Pruning, and by more the bigger the tree. On a 40-foot tree in a suburban garden our two models give $741 to prune against $1,342 to fell — pruning is 55%. On a 60-foot tree over a house it is 36%, because felling has to bring the entire mass down past whatever is underneath while pruning only takes the ends. Both figures come from the same wage data and the same regional adjustment, so the ratio means something. Pruning stops being the answer when the tree is structurally unsound, when it is genuinely in the wrong place, or when what is wanted is a large reduction in height — and for that the honest options are a proper reduction or removal, never topping.
What time of year is best to trim trees?
Late autumn through late winter, while the tree is dormant, and the reason is the tree rather than the money. Without leaves the structure is visible, so a pruner can see what they are doing; the cuts begin closing as growth starts in spring; and most pathogens are inactive. It also happens to be the cheapest window — $689 against $741 here — because there is less canopy to chip and haul and crews are quieter. ⚠️ Two exceptions worth asking about before you book: some species should not be pruned in spring at all, oaks in much of the country among them because of disease spread, and deadwood can be taken out at any time of year — in fact it is easiest to spot when everything else is green.
How to estimate tree trimming cost?
Work out the climb rather than the cuttings, which is the opposite of how most people approach it. Three things set the hours: how much canopy there is, which follows the height more than the trunk; what is underneath, because pieces over a roof are roped down individually rather than dropped; and which job you are actually asking for — a deadwood clean is $632 on this tree and a full crown reduction is $930. Then add the call-out, which is fixed. The single most useful consequence: $2,048 for four trees is $512 each against $741 for one, so batching is worth more than negotiating.

Other cost calculators
The first of these are the jobs closest to this one — the ones that turn up in the same quote, or instead of it.
- Stump grinding cost
Prices grinding by the inch of diameter, the trade's own unit, and explains why the job is an excavation in the federal sense.
- Sod installation cost
Prices sod by the whole pallet, which is how it is sold, and shows that the grass is a third of the bill and the ground under it the rest.
- Tree removal cost
Prices a tree from its height AND its trunk diameter, because height alone is the wrong variable, and shows what the drop zone underneath it costs.
- Chimney sweep cost
Prices all three trade inspection levels separately, because sweeping is the cheap half, and shows the one deposit no brush removes.
