Door Installation Cost Calculator
Fitting one interior door runs about $931 in Atlanta — $553 to $1,310 — and an exterior entry door $2,112. The gap is not size, it is job: on an interior door the unit is about 23% of the bill and everything else is hours. Doing several at once is the cheapest move available here — $931 for one against $722 each for eight, because the call-out is paid once.

The one input that changes the answer for you.
Door, frame and hinges arrive assembled and go into the rough opening as one unit, shimmed plumb. Dearer to buy and faster to fit, and it sidesteps every problem an out-of-square old frame causes. In a house that has settled at all, this is usually the cheaper answer once the hours are counted.
The same appearance with a dense composite core. Heavier, so it needs three hinges rather than two, and it is the cheapest genuine improvement available in a house: the difference in sound between hollow and solid core is the difference between hearing a conversation and knowing one is happening.
What every quote assumes until somebody checks. Worth checking: hold a level against the frame, and open the old door halfway to see whether it stays put or swings.
What the opening is worth
| The existing opening is sound and square | $956 |
|---|---|
| The opening has moved and needs correcting | $1,026 |
| There is no opening yet, or it has to be made bigger | $1,367 |
This is where a fixed-price quote turns into a conversation, and it is checkable before anybody arrives: hold a level against the existing frame.

What you are buying is mostly not the door
| Kind of door | Hours | The door | Installed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interior door, slab only | 1.8 | 27% | $800 |
| Interior door, prehung in its own frame | 2.6 | 22% | $956 |
| Exterior entry door, prehung | 5.5 | 47% | $2,165 |
| Entry door with sidelights or a transom | 8 | 38% | $2,681 |
| Sliding patio door | 6.5 | 39% | $2,593 |
| French patio doors | 7.5 | 38% | $2,652 |
An exterior door is not a bigger interior door, it is a different job: $2,165 against $956 for the same house. What the money buys is a sill pan under the threshold, flashing lapped correctly over the housewrap, shimming tight enough for a weatherstrip to seal all the way round, and a deadbolt that throws freely into its strike. ⚠️ Every one of those is invisible the moment the casing goes on, which is exactly why two quotes for the same door can differ so much — they are not pricing the same thing around it. Water that gets past a threshold with no pan under it goes into the framing, and the first sign is usually a soft floor several years later.
Slab or prehung, on one interior door
| The opening | Slab only | Prehung |
|---|---|---|
| Square and sound | $800 | $956 |
| It has moved | $1,064 | $1,026 |
The two rows swap over, and that is the whole point. On a square opening the prehung costs $156 more. On an opening that has moved the prehung is $38 cheaper, because a slab has to be planed to a frame that is no longer true and the hinges re-mortised to match, while a prehung is simply shimmed plumb inside the opening and the casing hides the difference. ⚠️ So the test is not price, it is a spirit level against the existing frame — and opening the old door halfway to see whether it stays put or swings. In a house over about thirty years old, the cheaper thing to buy is frequently the dearer thing to fit.

Where these numbers come from
- An exterior door is a different job, not a bigger one
- $2,112 against $931 for the same house, and the extra is almost none of it the door. What it buys is a sill pan under the threshold with end dams, flashing lapped correctly over the housewrap at the head and jambs, shimming tight enough that the weatherstrip seals all the way round, and a deadbolt that throws freely into a strike screwed into framing rather than into the jamb. Every one of those is invisible the moment the casing goes on, which is exactly why two quotes for the same door can differ so much — they are not pricing the same thing around it. ⚠️ Water that gets past a threshold with no pan under it goes into the framing and the subfloor, and the first sign of it is usually a soft floor several years later, by which point the door is not the problem any more.
- When the cheaper door is the dearer job
- A slab reuses the frame that is already there and a prehung brings its own. On a square opening the slab wins: $783 against $931. On an opening that has moved the order reverses — $1,004 for the slab against $990 for the prehung— because a slab then has to be planed to a frame that is no longer true and its hinges re-mortised to match, while a prehung is shimmed plumb inside the opening and the casing hides the difference. ⚠️ So the question is not which is cheaper, it is whether your frame is square, and that is checkable in a minute before anybody quotes: hold a level against it, and open the existing door halfway to see whether it stays put or swings. In a house over about thirty years old, assume it has moved.
- The glass is not optional and not an upsell
- Glass in a door, and glass in the sidelight beside it, is architectural glazing material under 16 CFR 1201, Safety Standard for Architectural Glazing Materials (govinfo.gov), retrieved 2026-08-24 — so it has to be tempered or laminated rather than ordinary glass. That is a real part of the price of any door with a lite, and the reason is federal rather than commercial. ⚠️ It is also checkable: safety glazing carries a permanent mark etched in one corner. If a replacement pane arrives without one, it is the wrong pane, and that is worth looking for rather than taking on trust. On the energy side, ENERGY STAR, Windows, doors and skylights publishes what the performance numbers on an exterior door label mean, which is the only part of a door showroom conversation with a standard behind it.
- Doing them together, and the pre-1978 question
- $931 for one door and $722 each for eight — 22% less per door, because the call-out, the tools coming out and the setting up are paid once rather than eight times. If several doors in the house are tired, this is the single cheapest decision on the page. Two smaller ones worth knowing: a hollow-core door is $804 against $931 for solid-core, and the difference in sound between them is the difference between hearing a conversation and knowing one is happening. And ⚠️ in a house built before 1978, prising off painted casing disturbs painted surface — the six-square-foot per room exemption in EPA, Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Program is easy to pass once two or three doors are involved, and then it is certified-firm work. Wages from BLS OEWS, May 2025, for carpenters and painters, retrieved 2026-08-20, with benefit load from BLS ECEC.
- Material prices
- Modelled estimates, not sourced prices. No public, machine-readable source of US residential material prices exists, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Each line carries its own uncertainty band. How we estimate them.

What this figure does not include
- Garage doors
- A completely different product with its own springs, tracks and opener, and its own page here. Nothing on this page applies to one.
- Structural work on a load-bearing wall
- Cutting a new opening is priced here for an ordinary wall. Where the wall carries load above it, the header size is an engineering question and the temporary support is a real cost, and neither is modelled.
- Repairing rot found under the old threshold
- ⚠️ The commonest surprise on an exterior door replacement, and it is invisible until the old unit comes out. Where a door has been leaking, the subfloor and the framing under it frequently need cutting out first. Ask any quote what happens if the sill is soft.
- Security upgrades beyond the lockset
- Reinforced strike plates are part of hanging a door properly. Multi-point locks, security screens and smart locks are separate purchases.
- Storm doors
- A second door outside the first is its own product and its own fitting, and it is frequently sold alongside a new entry door without being separated on the quote.
- Matching an existing period door
- On an older house the profiles, the panel layout and the sizes are frequently not made any more. A joiner making one to match is a different order of cost from anything on this page, and it is sometimes the only thing that looks right.
Questions people actually ask
What is the typical labor cost for installing a door?
On this model an interior prehung door is 2.6 trade hours in Atlanta and an exterior entry door 5.5, at carpenter rates that are benefit-loaded and carry a declared contractor markup — the whole chain is on our method page. The hours are where interior and exterior separate, not the door: an exterior unit has to end up plumb enough for a weatherstrip to seal all the way round and for a deadbolt to throw freely, which is a tighter tolerance than any interior door is held to. ⚠️ Add the state of the opening. An opening that has moved adds real hours, and that is where a fixed price turns into a conversation.
Is $200 a good price for an bedroom door replacement?
For the door on its own, yes — a hollow-core slab is well under that. For the door fitted, it depends on what is included. Stripped right back to a hollow-core slab into the existing frame with no new hardware, no new casing, no painting and the old door left with you, this model gives $396 in Atlanta. Add a solid-core slab, new casing, a lockset, painting on site and taking the old one away and it is $783. ⚠️ So $200 is plausible as a bare fitting and not as a finished job, and the gap between those two is not anybody being greedy — it is five separate things that were or were not in the price.
How much does Home Depot charge to install a door?
We do not have their price and will not invent one. What is worth knowing is the shape of a big-box quote: a flat rate delivered by a local subcontractor, covering a defined scope. The lines that make a door job expensive sit at the edges of that scope — the state of the opening, new casing, painting on site, safety glazing if there is glass, and on an exterior door the sill pan and flashing. On this model the same interior door runs $931 into a square opening and $990 into one that has moved. Compare a flat rate against this breakdown line by line and ask, in writing, which of them it includes.
How much will Lowes charge to install a door?
Same answer and the same advice: we do not publish other companies' prices, and a single national figure would be misleading anyway, because the variation is your house rather than retail margin. On this model one interior door is $931 and eight in the same visit are $722 each — the call-out and the setting up are paid once. An exterior entry door is $2,112 and a sliding patio door $2,531. What any flat rate is really telling you is which case it has assumed, so the useful question is what happens when the opening turns out not to be square.

- Garage door installation cost
A new door rarely weighs what the old one did, so the springs have to be sized to it. This shows what a «door only» quote leaves out.
- Garage door repair cost
Prices every fault separately instead of averaging them, says which three a homeowner can safely do, and finds the age at which repairing stops paying.
- Driveway sealing cost
Prices sealcoating by the five-gallon pail rather than by the square foot, and divides the job by how often it is done, which is the number that decides it.
- Paver patio cost
Prices a paver patio from the base up, where most of the work is, and sets it against a poured concrete slab of the same size from our own model.
